Oyster Fest

This past weekend was the Wellfleet Oyster Festival. We kicked off our oyster day with the annual "Shuck and Run" road race. We're not exactly sure why it's called that because there is no shucking required, but entrance fees benefit local agricultural efforts, and, as always, we like to run for food. Actually, Mal and other members of the Kender family ran, Pete and I, still all snuffles from our colds, held down a small patch of grass, cheered like mad, and lamented the fact that neither of us had thought to bring tissues.

Customary, pre-run game faces. You don't want to mess with this.

The festival was a great success with more people attending this year than ever before, and with an amazingly well coordinated trash and recycling program orchestrated throughout the event. Unfortunately, with half of us having just run a 5k, and the other half still frantically searching for tissues, our party was not really prepared for the oyster slurping, beer drinking, rollicking good time that most individuals were already having...at 10am. But a good time was still had by all with, delightfully, tons of food to be sampled and wonderful crafts and creative, local color all around.

Mal and Tim joyfully model some stellar, powdered sugar topped, fried dough and what we deemed the greatest falafel sandwich of all time from Provincetown's Karoo Kafe.

And to demonstrate the true importance of this event, the film crew for the Cooking Channel's 'United Tastes of America' was present, with host Jeffrey Saad taking in all the action. We may have innocently wandered into a shot, and were asked to go about our business as usual and not look directly at the cameras. Jeffrey was nice enough to take some photos with us, and to let Tim give him a lift!

Jeffrey and Tim. Not sure who is making the best face -- Tim, Jeffrey, or the random guy to the left who can't believe what he's seeing.

Food, jogging, friends, tissues (or rather paper napkins serving as makeshift tissues) and sunshine. It was a beautiful day and way to celebrate our local bivalves.
